The Ringtone Only Kids Can Hear

This is no joke.

Recently an article in The New York Times reported kids using a high-pitched sound as a cell phone ringtone.
Due to the fact that adults gradually lose the ability to hear high-pitched sounds, only people of a certain age can hear the sound. Depending on how good a person’s hearing is, they may still be able to hear the sound in their 20′s and 30′s.

I’ve tested it with myself and an adult in his early 30′s. I could clearly hear the sound, while he could not, no matter how high I turned up the volume.

In an effort to preserve the file, I’ve made the MP3 available for download here

  1. I could hear it when I leaned in very close. Does that mean I’m younger than 30?

  2. That’s totally awesome!
I want to get that as my ringtone.

If only my computer at work had speakers….
I will check this later when I get home.

  3. I am at home. I checked it out. I can hear it.

It’s very awesome. I wonder how hard it would be to get it as my ringtone. Is there some place/way that I could do that?

Josh, How sweet of you to think that your mother is in her early 30′s. Oh wait, maybe I’m not the one you’re talking about.

Dad and I honestly thought you and your brothers were playing a practical joke on us when you did “the test”.

We both have scheduled hearing tests with the Doctor! Ha! Ha!
